Recently visited the Weissenhof Siedlung, a 1927 housing development in Stuttgart established by the German Werkbund. Created as an exhibition of new materials, methods, technologies, and experiences, the Weissenhof development sought to create houses that reduce construction cost and on-going operating costs while increasing quality. The development plan, created by Mies van der Rohe, was populated with houses by an international selection of architects, including by Mies, Oud, Le Corbusier / Jeanneret, Gropius, Behrens, Scharoun.
Today the houses are still used as private residences, with the exception of a house by Le Corbusier, which is a museum / interpretive center about the development. The foundations of the development are timely today, demonstrating the possibilities when architects, manufacturers, and constructers work together to create affordable and sustainable concepts for living. Anyone Game?
